Historical Commission clears Thayer turf field project

Historical Commission · Meeting of May 4, 2026

Braintree Historical Commission grants Certificate of Inapplicability for Thayer Academy facility improvements. The commission voted 3-0, with Chair Kate Nedelman Herbst abstaining due to a conflict of interest, to clear the turf field project at 745 Washington Street for construction. The project, approved by the Planning Board on April 14, includes a new artificial turf field, track, grandstands, and four 70-foot lighting poles replacing existing generators and rented lights.

Member Carl R. Johnson III emphasized the importance of modernizing the athletic facility under Chapter 40C, noting that improvements not involving exterior architectural features do not require historical district review.
